McDonald’s Fairies And Dragons

I have been patiently waiting for the last 6 months to write this post. Back in April of 07 we started on what I think is the coolest project I have ever had the pleasure to work on. Today we launched This is the accompanying site for the very first Interactive Digital Happy Meal Toy that we created for McDonald’s. The toy launched this month in some markets in Europe, and will continue to roll out from now until June. It is so great to finally see our idea and characters come to life online, on tv, and in stores after working on it for over a year now.

While the developing the toys, our talent and knowledge was tested on a daily basis. It was an emotional roller coaster at times, but we came away learning a lot. I have never been so proud of our Flash team, and entire production team for that matter. I will be giving a talk at FiTC next week on the development process of creating the interactive toy and some of the things we learned along the way. I will be posting some of the content from the presentation here afterwards, so if you can’t make it be sure to come back and check it out.

If you want to read more about the overall process and see screen shots and videos, check out the case study on our site.

If you are having problems installing any of the characters off of the CD you can contact support { at } Please include what Operating System you are using and the issue that you are having.

My 6 yr old wanted to try this after seeing the ads at McDs. Strangely though the happy meal & toy she got wasn’t F&D even though there was a big poster outside…

First the good stuff. I think the style is very nice for this theme and very cohesive. Music & voices also tie in well.

The music however is on a very short loop so becomes too repetetive and annoying very quickly.

The flashing play icon is very distracting when kids take the time to do the jigsaw / memory game. There’s no need for it to flash so insistently for so long.

Where is the reward for playing it through? You can just click on the fairies at the bottom to see them and there is no reward after collecting all 4 seeds. The seeds keep reappearing after they have been collected as well.

One final thing you could improve for future sites: the instruction screen with the flashing mouse pointer and flashing mouse – my daughter kept clicking on the mouse & pointer to proceed rather than the flashing arrow at bottom. I know she is only 6 but still think it is not very intuitive.

Generally nice work though – hope you can take all the above as constructive criticism as it is meant ;-)

I’m not too happy with this at the moment. I’ve downloaded it onto the main pc for my son and it works fine. But once i downloaded it to my laptop it wont play one of the games and wont tell me why. Just comes up with ‘gamewrapper has stopped working and windows will close the program’. I’m a little peeved as I can’t figure out how to fix it. Both my laptop and pc run Vista and it should work fine. Any suggestions?

Great feedback. We love to hear great constructive criticism and how we can improve our work. Thanks for taking the time to send your feedback.

We actually didn’t have the play button glowing at all before. But we found that over the first couple of days it seemed that people didn’t know to click on it. This is why it stands out a lot more then maybe it should.

We also had it so that you had to collect all of the seed for each character to be able to see that character’s bio page. But some of the focus group feedback showed us that some kids wanted to play the owl game and others wanted to just see the content. So allowing users to access it at anytime was our compromise to help facilitate each type of user.

I am glad that you said what you did about clicking on the mouse pointer to enter the owl game. This is something that has been on our list for last couple of site updates, but for various reasons has not made it into a working build. Look for this to change over the next couple of days.

Again thanks a lot for the feedback. It is really important in understanding how our demographic is using the site and playing with the content. Focus groups don’t always account for everything and it’s great to hear what our users have to say.

Hey Tammy. Thanks for letting us know about the problem you are having. We actually encountered this bug a couple of weeks ago after a Vista update. The application was running on this machine perfectly since November until the update happened.

We are looking into and will hopefully have a update shortly.

To get around the permission error you need to install the application using an administrator account.
Let me know if you still have problems.

My daughter is 6 and she found games not so interesting.
I will explore your web above a little. But it shouldn’t be so, daughetr should be able to run CD herself.

my kids brought me a “Fairies” and a “Dragons” CD-ROM back from their meal at Mc.
I am trying to make it work under Mac OS X 10.4 under their account which of course is restricted under “Parental Control”.
It fails after the intro. This is highly frustrating for me and for my kids.

    What I did so far:
I copied the “Fairies” and and the “Dragons” application (the only icon visible on CD) from CD to the Applications folder.
In the Accounts prefpane, I “turned on” these two apps for my kids account. I also checked “Allow supporting programs” – this helped at least to start the games, but not past the intro…

Stephen, I don’t think you can just copy the files from the disc as it’s an actual installer.

I had the alert problem on OS X when I tried to install it whilst logged in to my daughter’s user area but found that running the installer whilst logged into my administrator account allowed it to install properly.

The application then resides in the Applications folder, titled “McDonalds Dragons” so that, when my daughter is logged in to her user area, she can launch the app. the same way she does with any other app. & is now playing away quite happily.

    Hope this helps.

Sorry, that should’ve read Stephan, not Stephen. D’oh!

    Now to my question.

My daughter wants to play Fairies rather than Dragons but the bar with 4 eggs on only seems to have a dragon available.

Is this simply a case of getting different CDs from McD’s?

There are 8 different CD’s available from McDonald’s at various times. 1 fairy and 1 dragon will be available each week. When you install another character it will be active in the launch bar.

Also, the Fairies and Dragons are seperated into 2 applications.
